Ask Freelock: Why pick Drupal/Ubercart over Joomla/Virtuemart?

Wesley at The Nubby Admin asks,

Drupal you say? I’m not too mid-stream to change horses if there’s a good reason to do so. If Ubercart has great digital content delivery features and the ability to sell URLs (and obfuscate the real directory structure), then I’d be all ears.

Oh, and your “About Freelock” page and subpages ROCK THE HECK OUT! =)

RadioFrame Networks

RadioFrame Networks came to Freelock in late 2008 for a web development project aimed at bringing their existing corporate static site content into the Joomla CMS. We worked with their existing design and web marketing strategy provided by The Garrigan Lyman Group which included implementing the design, setting up the content structure, and hosting the site as well as a development version of the site.

Unfortunately, the site never went live as RadioFrame Networks became a casualty of the global recession before the website launched.

How to Make a (un) Useful Travel Website

Planning a vacation is tough. Between the pain of finding a hotel or final destination, booking an airline, and locating information on things to do, one could spend days online surfing from website to website searching for items that may or may not be correct and/or relevant.

Isn't a vacation supposed to relaxing? Shouldn't planning and booking a vacation be as relaxing?

I think so.

E-Commerce and Ubercart Website Development

We've built custom shopping carts, as well as implemented several different open source shopping carts, including Zen Cart, OS Commerce, VirtueMart with Joomla, and Ubercart in Drupal. We've also built SOAP servers to allow manufacturers to take orders from distributors. We've built payment gateways for several of these systems, and imported products and images from other content management systems and existing online stores.

Drupal

An Open Source Content Management Platform

Drupal is powerful content management platform that is capable of supporting a multitude of websites. With a strong development community and rapidly growing user base, Drupal has built its platform around a sleek core infrastructure upon which modules can be added to enhance the features of the site.

Drupal vs. Joomla

Dan Knauss of New Local Media wrote up a nice comparison between Word Press, Joomla, and Drupal last summer, which I came across last weekend. I dropped him a line with some updates based on my experiences, and he responded in a blog post: More followup on CMS comparison and notes on the Joomla extension market.

Riverview Community Church

Riverview originally came to Freelock to design and develop a website that would serve the needs of their rapidly growing church community. Originally a simple Joomla deployment, we have since added several items that have enhanced the look and feel of the site, and expanded the sites capabilities to allow for sermons to be broadcasted via podcast which allows church members to access past sermons at the click of a mouse!

BlueView Technologies

BlueView Technologies initially hired us for Linux server administration in 2007. We have worked extensively with BlueView, expanding their IT infrastructure from one server which did everything to a much more resilient network of 4 servers providing a variety of different functions for the fast growing company.

Custom Modules Add-ons

Don't see what you're looking for? If it can be done on the web, we can do it. We've built dozens of custom sites and applications for companies, and we love doing bigger projects. Most of our price-sensitive customers choose to buy a bucket of hours, identify a few goals, and have us start working on them. Our hourly rates drop the more hours you buy, from $120/hour for a 10 hour bucket down to $85/hour for 150 hours.

Open Source Marketing Tools

Create top notch websites in Drupal and Joomla

Any growing business needs to be able to maintain a relationship with their current customers while reaching out to new potential customers. Balancing how much of the budget will be spent keeping customers vs. finding new ones is a budget decision that keeps many organizations awake at night, and it doesn't have to.

Customer Feedback

Freelock computing is, in my experience, unique in that they have assembled a comprehensive, well-rounded team of technical specialists yet they function on a high level together as a team. The Freelock team is adept at speaking in human, non-technical terms  when discussing projects with laypeople.

Throughout the development process we inevitably came to many decision points in terms of which direction we would continue, and Freelock was always instrumental in counseling us through the merits and liabilities of the choices in front of us.
