Technical details

In an open source environment, many programs work together to provide an email system. We have become proficient in managing what we think is a great system for small businesses. These are the programs in our email stack:

  • Postfix MTA (Mail Transfer Agent), provides basic mail server functionality, accepting mail for delivery on the Internet
  • Amavisd-New framework for content filtering
  • Clam Anti-Virus engine, scans both incoming and outgoing mail
  • Dspam Anti-Spam engine, scans mail before delivering to particular domains or mail boxes
  • Maildrop local delivery agent, delivers mail to mailboxes
  • Courier-IMAP, provides SSL-encrypted IMAP and POP services
  • Squirrelmail, a fantastic web mail program
  • Cyrus-SASL, provides SMTP Authentication to restrict mail server access to our users
  • MySQL, stores the Dspam token dictionary and user account information
  • Apache, used for Squirrelmail and the Dspam quarantine
  • mod_auth_mysql, provides authentication for the Dspam quarantine

We're especially impressed with our spam filter. Compared to others like SpamAssassin, we see very few false positives--messages flagged as spam that are really mail you want to get. And using it is truly brainless--you don't have to think about setting rules, or whitelisting your addressbook--all you have to do is tell it when it makes a mistake.

We also love IMAP. It's great for being able to access all of our mail from any computer, and handles our backups for us.

Contact us if you'd like to have us host your email, or install our system on a Linux computer in your office. We can often convert an older computer you've retired to a closet into a fully functional email server.
