User Experience

If you’re not a website developer, it’s hard to know what works and what doesn’t work on a website. You can get all the right information onto the pages, but how do you know if a visitor will be able to navigate smoothly to the information they need? How do you know if the site is pleasing enough for them to stay on and click through?

Picture this:

A person types into the navigation bar “family healthcare”. The top two search results are Company A and Company B. The person naturally clicks on Company A’s link because it’s the number one search result. Company A is a bigger business than Company B and has more members, but its website is terribly difficult to navigate. It provides little information on what coverage Company A provides, nor is it clear on which doctors are included in the network. Worse, each page takes 15 seconds to load because of the one or two irrelevant photos that accompany the text. The website is an attention-killer. After spending four unimpressed minutes on Company A’s site, can you guess where the person navigates to next?

That’s the power of UX, or User Experience. Good User Experience retains attention and carries a convincing pitch. Too many companies offer amazing products but never reach an audience because their website forgets about user experience.

Examples of bad user experience:

  • Website drowns the viewer in information.
  • Pages do not flow in an intuitive pattern.
  • Website focuses too much on visuals and wow-factor, and forgets to tell about the company.
  • Links lead to errors.
  • Information is dated.
  • Long load times cause visitor defection.
    • Remember: the average attention span is 9 seconds.  If you are concerned about load times, Freelock’s Website Performance Monitoring service will fix that.
  • Missing calls-to-action (CTA). “I love your product, but I can’t find the link to buy it.”
  • Too-aggressive tactics. (pop-ups, moving elements, etc.)
  • Opt-In boxes automatically checked for sign-ups.

A good UX designer understands that these are real people who are coming to the site because they have a need and they can’t fulfill that need themselves. Companies damage their chances for customer occasions when they forget the experience behind product/service discovery.
