Measuring Results with Analytics
Hi,
At Freelock we're kicking off our long-anticipated "Vision" program, a series of newsletters, blog posts, and videos about website effectiveness. Before we get into the meat of things, we're setting the stage with the question, "How do we know if it worked?" And the answer is -- data.
So this month we're looking at a primary source of data, Website analytics.

The scientific method and website effectiveness
How do you know if your website is working effectively? What does that even mean?

What site owners need to know about Analytics
Stuart always has insightful things to say about Website analytics. Here's a conversation we had a while back, about the key things site owners should consider with their website analytics, and the serendipity to be found by digging through data and talking with each other.

Is your company’s website scaled for your growth?
Every website has different business requirements. Some are built for speed, while others are built for stability. Some are built to balance speed and stability. Admittedly, all websites have to deliver the data they are supposed to deliver quickly and accurately to those that are supposed to receive it.
Many people do not realize that Google penalizes pages that take longer than 6 seconds to load. If Google penalizes you, this means you are going to be substantially less-likely to come up on Google search, thus sending potential customers directly to your competitors.

It's not just how a website looks...

... that counts. Results matter. What results are important for you? What are you trying to accomplish with your website?
Ways to measure your website’s effectiveness
We've worked with many clients over the years, who all have very specific website development needs. While some clients may share common goals, each may approach those business goals in different ways. But, time and time again, we usually start by asking a client in what ways are they measuring their website's effectiveness. In this 4 part series, I'll discuss identifying purpose and overcoming obstacles, complaints of current site capabilities and establishing budget, metrics to success and selecting a vendor, then finally risk tolerance and disaster recovery planning.
How do you rate Performance?
How quick do pages on your site load? How quick should they load? How do you make pages load quicker?

[Edit: Thomas point out this is not really factorial, because it's addition of each number in the sequence intead of multiplication].

I wanna change my website
Before doing any changes to your web site, the first thing to figure out are your goals. As a web development shop, we focus on building web sites that create measurable value for our customers, aligned with their goals.

Chances are, whenever you do anything on any website in the world, Google knows about it. That's because half of the top million sites use Google Analytics to track everywhere you go. Nearly 2/3rds of the top 10,000 sites use Google Analytics. And out of all 186 million active web sites in the world, including a huge number of spam or parked domains, nearly 16 million of them use Google Analytics.
