I've been maintaining the matrix_api module on Drupal.org since 2016, nearly a decade of it doing one thing well: posting Drupal events into a Matrix room. This year that changed. matrix_api is becoming a real, bidirectional bridge between Drupal and Matrix, and I'm documenting the build in a new video series, Drupal Meets Matrix.
The first video is up: setting up the matrix_api module and connecting Drupal to a Matrix homeserver - the foundation for everything else in the series, from content sync to identity bridging to an application server that lets Matrix and Drupal talk both ways.
This isn't a hypothetical integration. It's the same system powering Carina, our internal Drupal-based management hub here at Freelock, and it's the foundation of my work as Matrix integration lead for Drupal's Groups Initiative, an effort to give Drupal communities an alternative to renting space on someone else's Slack.
